But like the erudite book, this one is well balanced with respect to the contrasts of science vs. The rationale for this condemnation was not an evaluation of the evidence, but the statement that Copernicanism was contrary to Scripture and Church teaching. No doubt there was a falling out between Galileo and the Royal College that contributed to his undoing, but the Jesuits are conspicuously absent in the final proceedings, which Fantoli asserts were heading toward a much more benign resolution until Urban VIII insisted on a more severe outcome. Galileo did offer some exegetical and theological arguments for why Copernicanism should not be prohibited.
