So, too, is his Christianity. Born in into a Christian home, Mbatha first took up art in Ceza Mission Hospital, where he was a patient and soon after became part of the now renowned E. His early linocuts are infused with this autobiography and with Christian themes in the narrative Zulu tradition. Although he uses these prints to illustrate this book, he does not directly discuss his work, interestingly enough.
Being an exile, of course, frames his life story and becomes the prism and sounding-board through which he sees and hears his homeland. It is a stream of consciousness, non-linear presentation. The thread of his story that deals with his art is hard to pick out, scattered as it is in snippets here and there. He certainly values the time he spent there and the friendships with other students and the mission teachers during the difficult apartheid period.
Mbatha does not refer to blacks and whites, but adopts a different color code: the blacks are the Blues, and the whites are the Greens.

Azaria Mbatha was born in Azaria was educated at a mission school for eight years. In he left Ceza Secondary School and began working as a clerk in Vryheid. Gowenius agreed and so, first at Umpumulo later known as Mapumulo and then at the Centre's permanent home at Rorke's Drift, Mbatha was introduced to art and supplied with materials.
However, he left South Africa to live in Sweden from In to he studied social sciences at the University of Lund.

Mbatha again was a trendsetter in April when two of his linocuts were accepted to the Museum of Modern Art collection in New York, making him the first black African artist to have work accepted by this international institution. Between and Mbatha was assistant secretary at the County Council office at Skane in Sweden. In he enrolled at the University of Lund in Sweden to complete a doctorate of philosophy in African historical symbolism.
Interestingly, Mbatha has also produced a body of intaglio prints and screenprints of great quality but regards these as private works not for public consumption.

Mbatha has always understood his role as an artist as a didactic one. Linocuts like Jesus after death plate have a consistent narrative structure. As in most of his work the composition is characteristically divided into three tiers and the narrative is enlivened with a brilliantly-organised pattern.
