Like Ms. Winehouse, Miss Simone was a manic depressive performer on the road to fame and fortune. She released music sporadically during the decade and felt she had been blackballed by the music industry for her political outspokenness. By the s she was living in Europe and playing small clubs for a couple hundred dollars a gig. She was later diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and began taking the antipsychotic Trilafon, which helped with her sometimes violent mood swings but damaged her motor skills.

Her final years found her once again performing to adoring crowds.
