British poet — Early work [ edit ]. He began to get his work published in local newspapers when he was 13, and by the late s he had decided he wanted to be a poet. Inhe won a competition to have one of his poems inscribed on a fountain in Hexham Market Square. Inhis mother died, and Gibson dedicated his first book of poems, Urlyn the Harper to her.

Several more books of poetry and plays followed, and bywhen he published Daily Breadhe was becoming well-known in literary circles. Inhis sister Elizabeth married and left Hexham, and after their father died the following year, Gibson also headed south, to London, where he began to make contact with a wider circle of poets. InWilfrid and Geraldine married, and moved to Gloucestershire, where they became part of a group later known as the Dymock Poets.

He was much affected by the war deaths that year of his friends, Rupert Brooke and Denis Browne and in November he attempted to volunteer for the army; he was rejected because of his poor health. He tried again the following January, and was again rejected as unfit. In latehe finally passed his medical and joined the army as a private soldier — initially in the Motor Transport Corps, later as a medical clerk, based near London.

He served until Rupert Brooke had left a share in the income from copyright of his poems to Gibson, which helped to ease the financially difficult post-war years.

During the s and after, Gibson continued to write, supplementing the family income with book reviewing and broadcasting. The Gibsons had three children: Audrey, born in ; Michael, born inand Jocelyn, born in His earliest published poetry was Mountain Lovers and had several poems included in various volumes of Georgian Poetry. His first play, Daily Breadwas produced in Gibson joined the British Army but remained in England.

Gibson was born in Hexham, Northumberland, and left the north for London in after his mother died. He had been publishing poems in magazines sinceand his first collections in book form were published by Elkin Mathews in His collections of verse plays and dramatic poems The Stonefolds and On The Threshold were published by the Samurai Press of Cranleigh infollowed next year by the book of poems, The Web of Life.
