Among his most bizarre antics there is, perhaps, the most outrageous occasion when during a military parade inKiprensky fell on his knees before Emperor Paul I and started pleading to allow him to join the armed forces. The young man was arrested, but strict punishment was not followed: Kiprensky was only scolded.

This case indicates that at that time, the young Kiprensky did not feel his calling to be an artist; he did not crave to devote his life to art as often happens with other great artists. As a particularly gifted student, Kiprensky, of course, was allowed to stay at the Academy. His first portrait, which the painter put on public display inhe dedicated to his foster father, Adam Schwalbe.

Later, after the artist's death, the portrait of his foster father was acquired by Emperor Nicholas I and transferred to the Hermitage in However, sadly, the trip had to be postponed for eleven years due to the acute military and political situation related to the Napoleonic wars in Europe. The artist did not lose time in vain at home. He was involved in work in the Kazan Cathedral among other graduates of the Academy.

Even though Kiprensky created the icon of the Mother of God with the baby, the process of icon painting was not able to captivate the artist. What he truly enjoyed was the abundance of private commissions for portraits: not only aristocrats and statesmen but also wealthy merchants and officials wanted to capture themselves in the work of the most prestigious at that time Russian portraitist.

InOrest Kiprensky went from St. Petersburg to Moscow. This creative trip lasted for three years, during which, inthe artist lived and worked in Tver. Kiprensky was awarded the title of Academician in for a portrait of His Imperial Highness Prince Holstein-Oldenburg, a portrait of the Lejb-Hussar Colonel Davidov, a portrait of the equerry Prince Gagarin, and a portrait of a councillor in commerce A.

Finally, in Maydue to the sponsorship and personal protection of Empress Elizabeth Alekseevna, whose portrait he had once painted, Kiprensky was able to travel abroad: first, he went to Germany, and then to Italy. During this period, Orest Kiprensky was already thirty-four years old — he was a mature, authoritative and established master of his craft.

The easy-going, elevated character of this inspired image, and the distinctive style of painting and composition were clear signs of a new attitude to portraitures. Both the personality and the work of the artist were suffused with the spirit of the liberal first decade of the nineteenth century. Kiprensky was a romantic artist, the first of the portraits to catch the tenor of the age and to poeticise the value and beauty of man's spiritual wealth.

The year saw the start of Kipensky's friendship with the well-known collector and art patron A. Tomilov, whose house was one of the centers of artistic life in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. It was around this time that the artist painted portaits of A. TomilovRMI. KusovRMA. On 27 February Kiprensky left for Moscow, where he was to help Ivan Martos complete his work on the monument to Minin and Pozharsky.

In Rastopchin's salon and at Mme Muravyova's house, he met the poets K. Batyushkov, P. Vyazemsky, V. Zhukovsky, S. Marin, and also Denis and Yevgraf Davydov. He was enormously influenced by the atmosphere of such meetings and creative discussions, by Rastopchin's private art gallery which had something like exhibits, including pictures by Velazquez, Van Dyck and Tintoretto and by the pre-war mood of Russia society.
